Description
Xylose is a monosaccharide, i.e. a simple sugar, which belongs to the class of sugars called pentoses. Its chemical formula is C5H10O5. Xylose is found in nature in the form of xylan polymers, which is a type of fibre found in many plants, especially wood, hence it is also known as wood sugar.
It is one of the eight sugars that are essential for human nutrition and among these sugars are galactose, glucose, mannose, N-acetylglucosamine, N-acetylgalactosamine, fructose and sialic acid.
It is also a sugar that can be used as an energy source for some biological processes. In the human body, xylose can be absorbed and metabolised, and is used in medical tests to assess intestinal absorption.
In addition to its importance in biology, xylose is also used in industrial and food applications, such as the production of xylitol, a natural sweetener, and in the production of paper and wood pulp.
