overview
About this sweetener -Sodium Saccharin
Description
Sodium saccharin (E954) is a sodium salt of saccharin, an organic compound that is 300 to 500 times sweeter than sugar. It is an artificial sweetener, which means that it is not found in nature, but is produced by chemical processes and also means that a very small amount is needed to achieve the same level of sweetness as conventional sugar.
Because it is not metabolized by the body, saccharin does not raise blood glucose levels, making it safe for people with diabetes or those on low-carbohydrate diets.
Saccharin is used in a wide variety of products, such as diet drinks, chewing gum, bakery products, candies, tabletop sweeteners, and in some pharmaceuticals such as syrups or liquid medications. One of the aspects of saccharin is that it can have a bitter or metallic aftertaste, especially when used in high concentrations. However, this taste can be disguised in some formulations by combining it with other sweeteners.
